Professional Golf Swing Styles

How do the pro’s get the most out of their golf shot?

Tiger Woods, Phil Mickleson, Rory McIlroy are among some of Golf’s greatest professional stars they have ever seen. Many people may ask how much they earn, how often they practice or how they got so good. Were they just born to be great golfers? Or is there more to it.

This curiousity led looking into their Golf swings to compare and contrast if there is a major significance in the style of swing you have at the professional level. A lot of times beginners are told they must master their swing,  but is it one specific swing that everyone needs to master? Or does it vary from person-to-person and is it about finding a comfortable swing that works for you and mastering that technique.

Let’s take a look at each professional Golfer’s unique swing:

Professional Golf Swing Styles: Tiger Woods

Tiger has been playing the game at a high level for two decades now and has experienced many ups and downs on and off the field. On the field, when he is playing well, many people equate it to his swing. Especially in his older age, the better that Tiger has been playing people will generally say is to do with his swing getting better again. So when Tiger’s swing is on point, what makes it his swing?

As of late, he decided to not go with a trainer and recreate his swing himself. The biggest difference noted is that his Range of Motion is very free and natural as opposed to other past seasons feeling more restricted. He also tends to put some more pressure on his right side and has more of a spine and shoulder tilt than normal.

Professional Golf Swing Styles: Rory McIlroy

He is known as one of the best driver’s of the ball in the game, so one may ask… how? What makes his swing so much better than his competitors? He is most well known for how far and straight he can hit the ball off of the drive and it’s to do with 3 tricks or techniques he does; among with other professional golfers; particularly better than others in his set up.

  1. Width in his stance
  2. Places the ball forward towards his left heel (for a Right Handed Swinger)
  3. Aligns his shoulders slightly behind the ball causing a dip of the right shoulder alignment helping you produce an upwards projection of the ball

Rory McIlroy’s lifelong coach and Mentor actually does offer a product that reveals his “Unique 6 Step Golf Lesson” which may be worth a further look to dig into what else Rory does so well with his Golf Swing.

Professional Golf Swing Styles: Ben Hogan

Ben Hogan has always been a man fixated on his golf swing. He is a big believer in Golf Swing Theory and has be known to have a golf swing secret of his own. His swing is very relaxed and seems effortless. Many people would consider it a golf swing that isn’t very fundamentally sound but it worked for him and he was a very consistent golfer especially in his short game. His head movement appears to be different among other professional golfers.

Here’s A Video Analyzing His Golf Swing

From video we can conclude Ben Hogan creates very unique leverage points, he has little to no body movement on his back swing and keeps outstanding stable head movement into his follow through.

Professional Golf Swing Styles: John Daly

Daly has been known to have inconsistencies in his game every now and then so it makes you wonder if it comes down to the fundamentals. Being a bigger guy, it gets associated with Daly being able to drive big for distance and his lack of consistent play being the cause of lack of technique. His swing would indicate that true as it is a very freestyle swing that has two really big turns; on the back and on the follow through; combined with his flexibility allowing him to get a way with less golfing technique.

Conclusion

From this we can conclude there is much benefit from having proper fundamentals in your golf swing unless you are someone who is naturally good at the sport and makes up for it with their unique talent that Daly has. Of course McIlroy and Woods have this unique talent as well, it goes to show that there are proper techniques that professional golfers all follow to play at the big level. it just seems that some of them have little differences in their swings that make them unique and perhaps why they are so talented.
