Golf Club Types: Fundamentals For Beginners

Different Golf Club Types For Beginners

This article focuses on different golf club types and is for people who are beginners to the game of Golf. Before starting out, it’s important to note that when you are golfing you will have a golf club set that will consist of 3 different types of golf clubs. It is also important to note that there are other variations of Golf Club Sets for more advanced players and that this will be discussing the recommended set for a beginner which is considered a standard golf club set.

The 3 Traditional Golf Club Types

In a Standard golf club set:

  1. Woods
  2. Irons
  3. Putter

When dealing with Golf Club sets, these three types of clubs will be in a standard beginner golf club set. Each type (Woods, Irons or Putters) have a different purpose on the Golf Course and an understanding where and when to use your clubs are essential to playing a complete game.

Woods will consist of two Golf Clubs with the Numbers 3 & 5 on them.

These clubs are used for long distance and are for your first shot off the tee, thus these types of Golf clubs are considered fairway woods. The 3 Wood Golf Club difference to the 5 Wood Golf Club is the degree in which the ball lofts, the 3 Wood having a slightly smaller degree of loft compared to the 5 Wood.

Irons will consist of  eight Golf Clubs with the numbers 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and P for your Pitching Wedge not to be mistaken for your Putter

These clubs are generally used for your second shot off the tee and are crucial for putting yourself as close to the hole as possible.

Putters will consist of just one Golf Club in your standard Golf Club Set and it is very distinct and different from the others. This is your Close range or “On The Green” Golf Club for putting the Golf Ball into the hole.
